Project
The goal of this assignment was to create an opening title sequence for the documentary "Operation Odessa" using only typography and accompanying music. The film explores themes of greed, criminality, and destruction. My approach highlighted these themes by constructing shapes from type, and reinforcing their impact through deliberate movement and color shifts, while ensuring the text remained legible and readable. I also sought to create a strong, intentional relationship between the typography and the music, allowing the textural and rhythmic qualities of the soundtrack to guide the sequence’s progression.

Approach
The process began with identifying potential typefaces and compiling mood boards to establish the visual direction of the sequence. Next, I selected music to accompany the typography, ultimately choosing the song “The Fourth Colour” by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. After analyzing the lyrical and musical elements, I began conceptualizing each scene, creating multiple hand-sketched storyboards to map out the sequence before moving into the digital workspace. Class screenings and critiques provided feedback on thematic clarity and motion, guiding refinements and improvements throughout the project.

Outcome
The final sequence established a cohesive relationship between the typography and the music/sound effects. The soundtrack served as a vehicle for introducing the film’s themes according to their narrative significance. The typography’s evolving forms and movements maintained full legibility while allowing viewers to engage with the implied meaning conveyed through the presentation of each title and credit.
